Q’s Tips and Wings BBQ: A Story of Growth and Excellence
Quincy and LaShawn Jones, seasoned entrepreneurs, have been serving their signature barbecue and soulful dishes for over 30 years. Their dedication to providing flavorful, high-quality meals has turned a family tradition into a thriving business.
Early Beginnings and Entrepreneurial Foundation
Quincy Jones developed a passion for barbecuing at an early age, learning alongside his parents at family gatherings. LaShawn Jones, the eldest of her siblings, honed her culinary skills under her mother’s guidance, later becoming a cook for Chicago Public Schools, where she prepared meals from scratch for over 500 students daily. These early experiences laid the foundation for their eventual partnership as a dynamic force in the barbecue industry.
Recognition and Expansion
The journey to entrepreneurship began in 2012 when Quincy participated in a local BBQ competition in South Holland, securing first place. His success continued the following year, earning him attention from the local community and the mayor. Encouraged by this recognition, the Joneses started taking orders from their home, eventually serving a growing customer base every weekend.
In June 2015, the Joneses officially opened Q’s Tips and Wings BBQ in Chicago, Illinois. Their unique barbecue flavors quickly gained attention, earning them a spot at the Windy City BBQ Classic. Although they didn’t win, the event provided valuable exposure. Shortly after, they catered a high-profile event for Motion Films, featuring Snoop Dogg and Chance the Rapper, further solidifying their reputation.
Acclaim and National Recognition
Q’s Tips and Wings BBQ has consistently been celebrated for its quality. In 2018, they were featured on Chicago’s Best-for their smoked tips and links, winning "Best Smoked Overall" in a statewide competition. Their standout flavors also earned them accolades at Wing Fest, where they placed third for two consecutive years, serving over 1,000 guests.
Adrian Miller, a renowned barbecue expert and two-time James Beard Award-winning author, included Q’s Tips and Wings BBQ in his book Black Smoke as one of the top 20 Black-owned barbecue establishments in the U.S. Additionally, the Chicago Tribune ranked them among the city’s top 10 barbecue restaurants.
